Dr. Balius graduated in medicine and surgery with distinction from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in 1986 and went on to specialise in physical education and sports medicine at the Universitat de Barcelona in 1989, obtaining a master's in sports trauma at the department of medicine of the Universitat de Barcelona, 1997-1999.

Doctor Cum Laude and distinction in medicine and surgery from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) for his work "Espondilolisis i Espondilolistesis ítsmica en Esportistes. Factors de Pronòstic i Estudi Longitudinal." This thesis was also awarded the Premi de la Real Acadèmia de Medicina de Catalunya as the best doctoral thesis (1997).

He has also won five national awards from different societies for works on sports medicine.
Co-author of 12 papers on sports injuries and/or musculoskeletal ultrasound and of the following books:
1. “Muscular injuries in sport: diagnosis, treatment and functional recovery.” Editorial Masson, Barcelona, 2005
2. Ultrasound of lower limb muscles. Systematic exploration and sports injuries. Editorial Masson, Barcelona, 2005.
3. “Musculoskeletal ultrasound - systematic exploration and nervous blockages.” Editorial Paidotribo, 2007.
Director of the sports medicine journal, Apunts since 2007.
Author of over 100 papers published nationally and internationally on sports injuries and musculoskeletal ultrasound, presenting some 200 reports and speaking in over 250 congresses and courses.
Currently working at CEARE (Centri d'Estudis de l'Alt Rendiment Esportiu) in charge of the locomotor section of the Consell Català de l’Esport and in the sports medicine and diagnostic imaging department of the Clínica Fundació FIATC, Barcelona (Clínica Diagonal).
